A Structural Analysis of Contractual Innovations within the CIS Milk Industry AgEcon
Jackson, Elizabeth; Gorton, Matthew; White, John.
Utilising primary survey data, this paper evaluates the relationships between a set of supplier development strategies and performance within the milk industry in Armenia and Ukraine. Improving supplier performance is a critical task for the dairy industry in the Former Soviet Union as, during the 1990s both the quantity and quality of agricultural output deteriorated sharply. Fragmented supply chains led to high transaction costs and, in some cases, market failure. Drawing on the work of Krause et al. (2000) and Doney and Cannon (1997), a theoretical framework is presented that proposes that, either directly or indirectly, supplier assessment strategies, supplier incentives, competitive pressure, direct involvement, and trust between buyers and sellers,...

A structural model of wealth, obesity and health in the UK AgEcon
Mazzocchi, Mario; Traill, W. Bruce.
Based on a household health production framework, this paper exploits the combination of socioeconomic, health and nutrition information from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey to analyze the endogenous relationship among wealth, nutrition, weight and the final health outcomes. Results show that higher wealth determines lower weight and better health as expected, but through a better diet rather than extra exercise or lower calorie consumption.

A Study of the Factors that Influence Consumer Attitudes Toward Beef Products Using the Conjoint Market Analysis Tool AgEcon
Mennecke, Brian; Townsend, Anthony M.; Hayes, Dermot J.; Lonergan, Steven.
This study utilizes an analysis technique commonly used in marketing, the conjoint method, to examine the relative utilities of a set of beef steak characteristics considered by a national sample of 1,432 U.S. consumers, as well as additional localized samples representing undergraduate students at a business college and in an animal science department. The analyses indicate that among all respondents, region of origin is by far the most important characteristic; this is followed by animal breed, traceability, the animal feed used, and beef quality. Alternatively, the cost of cut, farm ownership, the non-use of growth promoters, and whether the product is guaranteed tender were the least important factors. Results for animal science undergraduates are...

A Successful Experience of Traceability System for the Case of Yin Chuan Organic Farm in Taiwan AgEcon
Huang, Wan-Tran; Chen, Ying-Houng.
In Taiwan, the traceability system (TS) of whole food chain is in infantile time. Yin Chuan Organic Farm, constituted by the team of rice production and marketing (TRPM), is the first brand in Taiwan rice market. The leader of TRPM is not only to produce the premising rice quality, but also to implement the (TS) that was introduced by Taiwan government with a great result and could be a successful experience passed to other proprietors. The findings of this paper are listed as following: 1. The TS executed by the case is only emphasized on the production side that needs to build more detailed marketing side. 2. The key successful factor to get sound TS model is to have obvious purposes and system harmony.

A Supply-Chain Analysis of Food Safety Standards Related to the Use of Wastewater for Irrigation of Crops AgEcon
Lagerkvist, Carl Johan; Johansson, Helena; Birol, Ekin; Roy, Devesh; Narrod, Clare A..
Irrigation with raw or diluted wastewater is a widespread phenomenon, occurring on 20 million hectares across the developing world, especially in Asian countries, but also in peri-urban areas around almost every city of sub-Saharan Africa and in many Latin American cities. Growing urban populations and consequent increases in demand for food and water has spurred the use of sewage to water crops as this is, in many cases, the only form of irrigation for farmers who either lack clean water or for whom clean water is too expensive. Wastewater has high nutrient value and constitutes a reliable source (Scott et al., 2004). It is mostly used to produce cash crops (e.g. vegetables and cereals). For example, it has been estimated that in most parts of Sub-...

A System Approach on Organizational Innovations in the Agro-Food Sector: The Case of AFSCs in Flanders AgEcon
Vandermeulen, Valerie; Vuylsteke, Anne; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
Together with the evolution from the agro-industrial model to the sustainable rural development model (Roep and Wiskerke 2004), a part of the agro-food market has evolved from an anonymous, mass food market to a quality-food market. This shift is driven by factors, such as the changing relations between supply chain actors due to concentration in retail and processing, the growing importance of quality standards, considerable changes in consumer habits and preferences, the increasing attention for the multifunctional dimensions of agriculture and the establishment of new markets for public goods and services (Kirwan, Slee et al. 2003; Jahn, Zerger et al. 2007). As a consequence, the contemporary agro-food markets are more and more characterised by...

A táplálkozási kultúra átalakulása Délkelet-Ázsiában AgEcon
Nemes-Sipos, Sandor.
Megállapítható, hogy a globalizációval együtt járó modernizációs és életminőség-javító folyamatok a tradíciókat csak igen lassan és korántsem teljes egészében váltják fel. A táplálkozási kultúrában kettősség érvényesül, fokozatosan billentve a mérleget a korhoz igazodó étkezési szokások felé.

A Tobit Analysis of WIC Children's Consumption of Pyramid Group Foods AgEcon
Chandran, Ram.
This paper develops and estimates an econometric model for children’'s consumption of the Pyramid Group foods using the Continuing Survey of Food Intake by Individuals (CSFII) for the years 1994-96, 1998. This analysis is accomplished using a Tobit model (censored dependent variable) and by appropriately incorporating the survey design characteristics. Results of the regression analysis indicate that participation in the WIC program significantly affects the consumption patterns of children, for certain types of Pyramid Group foods. After controlling for other factors, WIC children consumed more milk, fruit and whole grain and less of added sugar than the group of eligible nonparticipating children.

A Two-Step Auction in the Presence of Negative Values: An Application to “Farm-Raised” Pre-Cooked Roast Beef AgEcon
Nalley, Lawton Lanier; Hudson, Darren.
Uniform auctions are commonly used to elicit willingness to pay for new or novel products, product attributes, or non-market goods. However, most auctions or other contingent-valuation techniques do not allow for negative values, despite the fact that many consumers hold negative values for these products or product attributes. We conducted a WTP auction for a new product along with a within-sample WTA second auction allowing for negative responses. We find that failing to allow for negative values significantly inflates willingness to pay estimates and estimates of expected market share. This paper provides a method of incorporating negative values into auctions and willingness to pay elicitation.

A Typology of Food Security in Developing Countries under High Food Prices AgEcon
Yu, Bingxin; You, Liangzhi; Fan, Shenggen.
The recent surge in food prices around the world may reverse the gains of reducing hunger and poverty in the recent years. This paper employs factor and sequential typology analysis using data for 175 countries to identify groups of countries categorized according to four measures of food security: utilization, availability, accessibility and stability. Nine indicators are used for this study: calories intake, protein intake, fat intake, food production, the ratio of total exports to food imports, soil fertility, length of growing period, coefficient of variation of length of growing period and urbanization. The analysis first identifies 5 distinct food security groups characterized by food intake then further split these groups based on similarities and...

A VALUATION OF PUBLIC DEMAND FOR THE PARTICIPATION OF NONGOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES IN MONITORING AND ENFORCING FOOD SAFETY REGULATIONS AgEcon
He, Senhui; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Rimal, Arbindra.
Lack of consumer trust in governmental food safety regulators hinders the promotion of consumer confidence in the safety of their food supply. One possible way to boost consumer trust is to allow nongovernmental agencies to participate in monitoring and enforcing food safety regulations. This study identifies factors affecting consumer desire for the participation of nongovernmental agencies. The information obtained from this study can be used in further valuation of the feasibility of the participation of nongovernmental agencies.
